'Tis the Season to Give, So Why Not Donate Your Hair?!

There's nothing more rewarding than donating for a cause or cure. With Christmas right around the corner, what better gift to give than your loving locks?! With millions of women and children losing hair from the harsh chemotherapy treatment, a gift like this will help restore their confidence and beauty. I composed a top 5 list of hair donation companies. Please check out their websites and see how you can get involved!

The goal of this organization is to help kids with medical hair loss by helping build their self-esteem. Get details on how to make a hair donation. If you are not able to grow your hair long enough to donate 10 inches or more, then you may want to consider a monetary donation in lieu of actual hair. Children with Hairloss also offers an online store, so you can buy hoodies, T-shirts and other apparel in order to help support their cause. You can view pictures of some of the kids they've helped and read some of the stories.

This public organization is non-profit and collects locks to make wigs for those under 21 who have a medical need. Learn a little bit about the history of this organization. You can even find a list of causes of hair loss, like alopecia and cancer. Learn how to nominate a child, apply for a hairpiece or donate your hair to Locks of Love. You will need 10 inches of hair in order to donate. There are very specific requirements for the hair, how it must be cut, stored, mailed and if perming and coloring is acceptable or not.

This organization tries to support the needs of ill children and their families by providing whatever they might need, including wigs for cancer patients or those suffering from other medical conditions that cause hair loss. You'll need to contact them about how to get involved. Many organizations are starting to team up with Wigs for Kids and no longer accept donations directly, even if they have a need for real hair to help make wigs. They also have a real need for camp counselors and other volunteers as well as monetary donations.

www.shaveforthebrave.ca

This program is for young adult cancer patients in Canada to help raise money for them. This event is a bit different in that you get people to pledge, shave your head and donate funds to help cancer patients. Are you a female who doesn't want to actually shave your head, but wants to support the cause? Become a Mane Mama and help rally together those who will have their heads shaved and cheer on the cause. The program has been going strong since 2006 and is an annual event.

www.wigsforkids.org

You can donate your hair in the name of a loved one. The site offers links to participating salons around the world. If you're a salon stylist, you'll also find details on how to cut a ponytail for donation. If you are seeking assistance for a child (under 18), there are forms on the site to be filled out to try to get a hairpiece for a child in need. There are many reasons listed why a child might need hair, such as children dealing with burns, chemotherapy, radiation or alopecia.
